IVF
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), the most popular type of assisted reproductive technology (ART), where eggs collected from a woman’s ovaries are fertilized in laboratory conditions and transferred to the uterus. One full IVF cycle takes three weeks, but sometimes, it takes longer and goes step by step.
The sequence of procedures in IVF cycle
Preparation:
After physical and hormonal evaluation of both the partners, women take fertility drugs for superovulation for 8-14 days. The patient will be under constant monitoring after administering the drugs containing Follicle Stimulating Hormone that boosts egg production.
Egg retrieval:
A day after administering a hormone injection to help the eggs mature quickly, a minor surgical procedure, follicular aspiration, is done to retrieve the eggs. A needle with a suction device is guided to the ovaries through the vagina of the woman who is under anaesthesia. The needle sucks in the follicular fluid and the egg along with it. It is then transferred to a test tube.
Fertilization:
From the sperm sample of your partner (or a donor sperm), healthy sperms and matured eggs are mixed and incubated overnight. The process of combining the sperm and egg is called insemination. It usually takes a few hours for a sperm to fertilise an egg.
Embryo transfer:
A medication since egg retrieval ensures that uterine lining of the women is prepped up to receive embryos. Around 3-5 days after retrieval, the embryo will be placed in the uterus using a catheter. After the procedure done in the patient’s full consciousness, there’s a wait for a day or two to check that the embryo implants in the uterine lining and starts developing.
Sometimes, multiple embryos are transferred to the embryo to boost chances of pregnancy, hoping that at least one will implant itself on the uterine lining Successful multiple implants would result in multiple pregnancies.
Pregnancy test:
Around 12 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is done to check the success of the IVF procedure. If the pregnancy test turns positive, ultrasound is done to confirm the viability of the pregnancy and to check if there’s multiple pregnancy.
